Diagnosing a Noisy Pedalboard Safely
A low-risk isolation sequence for finding pedalboard hum, buzz, bad cables, and power problems.
Check whether the noise changes when you touch the strings, but do not defeat any safety ground or use homemade mains adapters. A change can help a tech describe the grounding or shielding symptom; it is not permission to improvise a repair. Write down the exact power supplies and outlets used.
Label every patch lead after testing and keep the failed one physically separate until it can be repaired or recycled. I used to drop bad leads back in the cable bag and rediscover the same fault at the next show. A cheap continuity tester is useful if you know its limits.
Also verify voltage, polarity, and current requirements from the pedal maker before connecting power; matching plug shape is not enough. An isolated supply can solve some loop noise, but it cannot rescue a damaged jack or wrong adapter. Your one-change-at-a-time method is exactly how I would document the fault.
