Our weekend pack starts with a shared inventory, not four separate just-in-case piles. Each instrument has a fitted case and owner label; the repair crate holds tested leads, fuses specified by the equipment maker, strings, drum keys, gaffer tape, a flashlight, and a basic hand-tool roll. We carry one confirmed spare instrument between compatible players, not duplicate rigs. Personal bags stay soft and small. Medication, water, weather layers, ear protection, and the vehicle emergency kit remain reachable instead of buried under cabinets. Heavy cases go low and are secured so they cannot become projectiles, while windows and mirrors keep clear sight lines. We photograph the final load and use the image for every stop. A compact, labeled packing system for essential gear, repair supplies, personal needs, and emergency basics.
A small document pouch earns its place: show contacts, insurance and roadside numbers, equipment list, and backup payment card. Keep digital copies too, but do not assume everyone will have signal or battery. I leave addresses of private sleeping spaces off any paper visible through the windows.
Ask every host exactly what backline exists and whether sharing is actually approved by its owner. Compact packing works only with confirmed details. A phrase like drums provided can mean shells only, so list cymbal stands, throne, clutch, kick pedal, and breakables individually before choosing what stays behind.
